Setapak
General Description
Setapak got its name from the headman of the aborigines who were the area's original inhabitants. In the past, it was known for its tin-mining and rubber plantations. In the early 1980s, Wangsa Maju became the first of the "modernisation pockets."
Setapak is a mukim located northeast of Kuala Lumpur in the Gombak constituency, covering an area of 62 square miles (160 km2). Its boundaries include Gunung Bunga Buah to the north, Genting Sempah on the Pahang border to the northeast, Bukit Dinding to the east, and the Rifle range to the southeast. The state constituency of Gombak Setia largely corresponds to the mukim of Setapak, which, before 1974, also included what are now the parliamentary constituencies of Wangsa Maju and Setiawangsa.
The primary river in Setapak is the Gombak River, which originates from Gunung Bunga Buah. The area includes various places, such as Gombak town, Kampung Padang Balang, Kampung Baru Air Panas, and several other villages.
In modern times, the term "Setapak" generally refers to the Wangsa Maju township and the surrounding areas, including the initial stretch of Jalan Pahang. The Titiwangsa Recreational Park is located just south of Setapak, while Loke Yew Hill holds historical significance, featuring ruins of a fortress and the dilapidated villa that belonged to the Loke family, after whom it is named. The hill also serves as the burial ground for the Loke family.
